Take charge of your health by getting annual physical exams.

When people think about physical examinations they often think about the annual exams that kids and teens need to get from their pediatrician; however, did you know that adults should be getting a physical examination from their doctor, too? Our San Antonio, TX, family physician Dr. Dan Hoyumpa is focused on preventive health care measures that help patients create a healthy life rather than just treating problems once they occur. Undergoing an annual physical examination is one of the best preventive measures you can get.

Here’s what to expect from your next physical examination at our San Antonio, TX, practice,

We’re Ask You Questions

Be prepared for Dr. Hoyumpa to ask you a lot of questions about everything from your medical history and your current medications to vaccinations, lifestyle and habits. The more information we can get from you about your lifestyle and health the better, as we will be able to more quickly pinpoint certain issues or help reduce your risk for developing certain health problems.

We’ll Check Your Vitals

One of the first things we will do when you come into our San Antonio, TX, practice for your physical examination is check your vitals. This means that we will record your height and weight and then check heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate and temperature.

We’ll Perform a Physical Evaluation

During the actual physical examination, Dr. Hoyumpa and his team will be examining and evaluating every part of the body, from your ears, nose and eyes, to reflexes, nerves muscles and organs. We will place a stethoscope on your heart and abdomen to make sure your heart and your bowels sound healthy.

We May Take Blood and Urine Samples

While a physical evaluation is important for all adults, even healthy ones without preexisting conditions, it’s also important that we perform comprehensive bloodwork at least once a year. A blood sample is often the best way to check cholesterol, blood sugar and hormone function so we can catch and diagnose issues such as diabetes, high cholesterol and thyroid dysfunction early on and provide treatment.

Why is a physical exam important?

A physical exam is one of the best preventive health care measures you can take. Even if you feel great, you may be surprised to discover that you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. This is because many health problems don’t cause symptoms. Therefore, the best way to catch health problems early is to come in once a year for a physical examination.
